Just bought a new Jeep? Here are our tips for new Jeep owners, so you can get started!

Get wheeling with a basic setup

Before you even hit that first trail, your first trip should be to your local off-road /Jeep supply shop. A great option is High Country Performance 4×4 here in Colorado (no affiliation).

Set up your basic equipment to get you started and to stay safe. No matter how good you get, this equipment will get you through your time as a wheeler! Here’s what you need:d

  1. Recovery Gear – strap, shackle(s), shovel, traction aids, etc
  2. Fire Extinguisher
  3. First Aid kit
  4. Maps/Mapping Apps

Do your research

Do your part to be a good member of the Jeeping community and do a little research and learn the rules and regulations for your local area.

Stay the trail! Don’t make new trails!

Learn the trail designations and how to read the local Forest Service Motor Vehicle Use Maps (MVUMs).

Think of Jeeping like skiing

Now that you have your basic gear, you are ready for your first trail.

Think of Jeeping like skiing – nobody hits the expert black diamond runs on the first day, no matter how good their skis are or how much they watched on YouTube. Start on the bunny slope and work your way up.

Learn from others

Find a local Jeep club and attend a beginner trail event; many clubs will have runs just for new owners like you.

If there isn’t a local club close by, or you want an accelerated learning experience consider getting a guide or attending a local class.

You can learn very quickly from others and avoid costly and embarrassing mistakes.

Get it dirty!

This is our favorite tip for new Jeep owners. Don’t treat your ride like a baby!

Spin those tires, ford the river, take the top off and *gasp! even get a bit muddy from time to time.
